There is a common misconception that bar chords are easier to play on an electric guitar than on an acoustic guitar. This is not necessarily true. While electric guitars may have narrower necks and thus require less hand movement to fret the notes, they also typically have lower action, meaning the strings are closer to the fretboard. Here's your C major chord using the A shape barre: 3 (G, perfect 5th) 5 (E, major 3rd) 5 (C, root) 5 (G, perfect 5th) 3 (C, root) X. If you play the low E (on the third fret) you get a C/G chord (a chord is named for the lowest note). Not wrong, but it will sound out of place. It is normal to have difficulty with barre shapes. However, my guitar education was mainly classical guitar. I've only been playing folk steel-string guitar for a year or two now, so maybe I'm biased toward nylon strings because I'm more used to it. On a side note, if you feel like you need to put a lot of strength into your fingers in order to play bar chords, try to adjust your finger position. First off, if your guitar isn't set up, it's going to be really hard to make the barre chord ring out on every note (i.e. it's going to take a ton of pressure and strain). So get your guitar set up with correct action and string tension - make sure it's in tune, and that the strings aren't too high off the fretboard. Second, practice your butt off. Db Guitar Chord - Barre #2 Db Guitar Chord - Barre #2. Use your 1st finger to bar the strings at the 9th fret. Place your 2nd finger on the 3rd string/10th fret. Place your 3rd finger on the 5th string/11th fret. Place your 4th finger on the 4th string/11th fret. With both of these variations, standard barre chord rules apply. Put your first finger (index) on the 3rd fret of the A string. Put your third (ring) finger or fourth (pinky) as a barre on the 5th fret of the D, G, B strings. Perhaps this shape is easier for you. You can choose to play the chord however you see fit based on the shape you find more comfortable. You could start by playing a F chord on the first fret, with a barre only on the E and B strings. 2. Make sure your barre finger is pushing down right behind the fret. As I play a little (15-20 min) it stars to hurt bitterly. Answer. I had exactly the same problem a couple of years ago. I hadn't changed my technique or hand position and for some reason, out of the blue, my thumb started hurting after short periods of playing barre chords. I gritted my teeth, played through it and the pain soon went away.
